cortex (noun) = the outer, protective layer (especially of the brain or other organs)
restrain (verb) = to keep under control some behaviours or to limit the growth of sth
He was sa mad that she couldn't restrain him.
visceral (adjective) = emotional, based on deep feeling rather than on reason
